Scholarship Award Gains Media Attention


The recent awarding of a full, four-year college scholarship to a Booker T. Washington High School senior by the Biscayne Bay Kiwanis Club received extensive print and TV coverage.

Three local television stations attended the awards ceremony, focusing on Ashley Wilfort as she listened to Rick Freedman, chairman of the Kiwanis Club’s scholarship committee, describe the winner. When she realized Freedman was describing him, Wilfort’s tearful reaction was caught on camera.

After the emotional ceremony, Wilfort and Freedman were interviewed for the heart-warming story that was shown several times during the day.
